A life-threatening situation in Oakford, KZN, took a dramatic turn when a 22-year-old man, heavily intoxicated, attempted to end his life by drowning in the Oakford River. The harrowing incident unfolded as officers from Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) sprang into action, rescuing the young man who was clinging to a piece of floating polystyrene while calling for help.

The man’s desperate cries were heard by nearby residents, but his exact location remained unclear. Fearing for his life, the residents immediately contacted the RUSA Operations Center. Responding officers found themselves facing challenging terrain, forcing them to abandon their vehicles and proceed on foot along the riverbank in search of the distressed man.

As the situation grew more urgent with the man’s cries weakening, RUSA deployed a helicopter to aid in the search. Thanks to the relentless efforts of the ground teams, the officers eventually located the man and pulled him to safety, preventing a tragic outcome.
