During a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump made headlines by declaring that he doesn’t need Elon Musk “for anything” despite publicly supporting the tech mogul with a personal purchase.
In a moment that drew both laughs and raised eyebrows, Trump told those gathered at the White House that while he holds Musk in high regard, there’s no strategic dependency on the Tesla and SpaceX CEO. “Elon has done a fantastic job,” Trump said, before clarifying, “I don’t need Elon for anything other than I happen to like him.”

I actually bought one, and they said, ‘Oh, did you get a bargain?’ No. I said, ‘Give me the top price.’ I paid a lot of money for that car,” Trump said with a chuckle, emphasizing that admiration, not perks, motivated the purchase.
Musk, who was present at the meeting, appeared amused and appreciative, nodding and smiling throughout Trump’s remarks.
